If you see someone you might want as a friend  click on there profile picture which takes you to their page.  once there ,if you want to request a friendship. under their profile picture is a contact panel where it says send message and  ETC. there you see request friendship.

click there and  the member gets a message from you saying you want to be a friend and they approve a friendship if they choose too.
